The Castle of the Carpathians is a Gothic novel by Jules Verne, first published in 1892. The story takes place in Transylvania, a mountainous region in Eastern Europe.
Near the village of Werst in Transylvania, stands the Castle of the Carpathians, an abandoned and sinister castle. The local population fears it and considers it haunted.
One day, a young man named Franz de Télek arrives in the village. He is looking for his friend, Baron Rodolphe de Gortz, who has disappeared several years ago. Franz is welcomed by the villager Gaspard, who tells him the legends surrounding the castle.
